Project Description

Kambo, Sapo, Dow-Kiet, Vacino da Floresta, are all names for the waxy secretion of a frog Phyllomedusa Bicolor or “Giant Monkey frog” that lives in the trees in the Upper part of the Amazon rainforest.

Around 13 tribes traditionally use this secretion to get rid of what they interpret as “Panema”, or bad luck, to gain extra strength and stamina for their “hunting magic” sessions, and as a medicine against malaria and other epidemic diseases. They claim the use of the secretion makes them strong, alert and invisible.

Kambo Birmingham

As with many traditional plant medicines, the origins of Kambo’s usage are unknown. However, legend tells of an illness-stricken indigenous village and a shaman, named Kampu who was desperate to help them. The shaman had tried everything he could think of to heal the sick villagers — every known medicinal herb and plant — but failed time and again.

Then one night, while under the effects of ayahuasca (another sacred medicinal plant medicine), Kampu was visited by the Great God. God brought forth a frog in his hands, from which he took a secretion and taught Kampu its secrets.

After returning to the tribe and following the God’s instructions, Kampu was able to heal his people. Following his death, it was said that his spirit lived on in the frog, and the villagers continued to use its secretion to stay healthy.

The secretion became known as Kambo but in some tribes, it is called Sapo, Kampu or Vacina da Floresta. Its usage spread and it is still used widely amongst indigenous people in the Amazon to this day although the rituals vary from tribe to tribe.

Research conducted since the 1980’s has shown the chemical makeup of Kambo to contain short chains of amino acids, known as peptides, that affect gastrointestinal muscles and blood circulation as well as stimulate the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland in the brain.

Scientific research has identified the peptides dermorphin and deltorphin in kambo as potent opioid peptides. Opioids are pain killers and opioid peptides bind to receptors on human cells which trigger a pain masking response. Dermorphin and deltorphin are amazingly 40 times stronger than morphine and 40 times stronger than b-endorphins which is the body’s natural pain killer.

When scientists analyzed the chemical makeup of the Phyllomedusa bicolor’s venom, they found that it contained new peptides with exciting beneficial effects on the human body. The top 8 are:

  • Dermorphin — a potent mu-opioid receptor agonist
  • Deltorphin — a very potent delta-opioid receptor agonist*
*Dermorphin and Deltorphin are 40 times stronger than morphine and 40 times stronger than endogenic b-endorphins
  • Phyllomedusin — a tachykinin which affects the salivary glands, tear ducts, intestines, and bowels; it contracts the smooth muscles, and contributes to violent purging
  • Phyllokinin (and phyllomedusin) — potent blood vessel dilators that also increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier
  • Phyllocaerulein — which stimulates the adrenal cortex and the pituitary gland, causes a fall in blood pressure, causes tachycardia, and has a potent action on the gastrointestinal smooth muscle, and stimulates gastric, biliary and pancreatic secretions
  • Sauvagine — which stimulates the adrenal cortex, causes a long-lasting fall in blood pressure and causes intense tachycardia
  • Adenoregulin — acts on the adenosine receptors
  • Dermaseptin — a potent antimicrobial for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and antiviral for herpes simplex virus. Sapo venom has been analyzed by scientists and is shown to contain many peptides that are beneficial to the body.

While there are no clinical studies that back up Kambo’s efficacy, the properties of Kambo peptides make it a promising treatment for the following conditions:

  • Depression
  • Migraines
  • Blood circulation problems
  • Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
  • Vascular insufficiency
  • Organ diseases
  • Cancer
  • Fertility problems
  • Deeply rooted toxins
  • Chronic pain
  • Addiction to opiate or prescription painkillers
  • Fever and infections

The effects of the Kambo are heightened sensory perception, increased stamina, enhanced resistance to hunger and thirst, a state of alertness, good mood, etc. which can last for several days or weeks.

In summary, Kambo is one of the strongest, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antimicrobial and anesthetic substances on the planet.

It is being studied for its effects on various types of cancer and for use in antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. There is anecdotal evidence and regular use amongst the tribal women to assist overcoming infertility

Kambo has no known detrimental side effects so when it is responsibly administered it is completely safe. There are very few people who cannot take it but this is not an exhaustive list so please let me know beforehand if you have serious health problems.

The basic treatment is traditionally applied to the lower leg in women and the upper left arm or chest in men.

The number of points is based on the person’s reaction to the test point with a minimum of 3 points and a maximum of 9 for a first-timer although the occasional person may need more.

Test Points: a test point is always applied to every person taking Kambo for the first time or if he has taken Kambo before several years and he is not unsure of what the reaction may be. Three points are burned although only on one point the Kambo will be applied if there are no negative reactions the other two points will be added.

Chakras are energy centers or portals in the human energy field. Located along the central channel of the body from the base of the spine to the top of the head, they are conceived of as whirling, wheel-like vortices through which universal/cosmic energy flows into and out of a person.

There are seven major chakras, plus many minor ones. Each chakra corresponds to specific glands, organs, and Kambo can be applied on the back of the spine to activate the energy channels.

Root — Represents our foundation and feeling of being grounded.
Location: Base of spine in tailbone area.Emotional issues: Survival issues such as financial independence, money, and food.

Sacral — Our connection and ability to accept others and new experiences.
Location: Lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel and two inches in.Emotional issues: Sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure, and sexuality.

Solar Plexus— Our ability to be confident and in control of our lives.
Location: Upper abdomen in the stomach area.Emotional issues: Self-worth, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

Heart — Our ability to love.
Location: Center of chest just above the heart.
Emotional issues: Love, joy and inner peace.

Throat— Our ability to communicate.
Location: Throat.
Emotional issues: Communication, self-expression of feelings and the truth.

Third Eye— Our ability to focus on and see the big picture.
Location: Forehead between the eyes (also called the Brow Chakra).
Emotional issues: Intuition, imagination, wisdom and the ability to think and make decisions.

Crown — The highest chakra represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually.
Location: The very top of the head.
Emotional issues: Inner and outer beauty, our connection to spirituality and pure bliss.

Meridians are channels of energy running through the body. Meridians are thought to connect the surface of the body with the internal organs. As long as Qi (energy) can flow through the meridians in the proper amount, not too much and not too little, the disease can be averted.

Every organ and major region in the body needs the energy to function. Energy comes from the nutrients we eat from food, and from free-flowing blood. Through precise positioning of Kambo points, we can strengthen or even up the flow of energy. There are six pairs of meridians (12 total major meridians), each affecting a corresponding Yin/Yang organ:

  • HT – Heart
  • LI – Large Intestine
  • LU – Lung
  • PC – Pericardium
  • SI – Small Intestine
  • TH – Triple Heater
  • GB – Gall Bladder
  • KD – Kidney
  • LV – Liver
  • ST – Stomach
  • SP – Spleen
  • UB – Urinary Bladder
  • CV – Conception Vessel
  • GV – Governing Vessel

The ears are often said to be a microcosm of the body. Each part of the ear relates to an organ, function or part of the body. Applying Kambo on the energy channels of the ear can enhance the treatment of menopause, headaches, arthritis, anxiety, addictions, insomnia, stress, pain, and many other conditions.

This is a treatment for people with previous experience. Three treatments are done in one session, let’s say you will start drinking 2 liters of water and have 7 points, drink 1.5 liters of water and have 9 points, drink 1l of water and have 11 points for a very intense healing session.

For traditional Amazonian tribespeople, sananga is a powerful eye medicine used to sharpen night vision. For modern seekers of spiritual healing, however, sananga does more than help with hunting. These powerful eye drops have a healing power that’s more energetic than physical, and that can increase spiritual insight in the minds of those who use it.

Sananga is still used by many tribes in the heart of the Amazon and it shows powerful potential to treat a spectrum of physical and psycho-spiritual illnesses:

  • Improves and prevents ocular diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, farsightedness, nearsightedness
  • Detoxifies the body
  • Increases visual perception and enhances colors
  • Clears long-standing inner anger
  • Used in conjunction, helps with mental disorders such as addiction, depression, and anxiety
  • Resets energetic field
  • Treats spiritual diseases (“panema”) caused by negative energies in the body. These spiritual diseases can accumulate in a person’s energetic body and make a person depressed and anxious.

While rapé is often made of several Amazonian plants, the core of most rapé snuffs is the tobacco species Nicotiana rustica. This Amazonian tobacco, also known as mapacho, is used extensively in tribal rituals and is much stronger than N. tabacum, the type of tobacco found in cigarettes.

In addition to the tobacco, rapé usually includes the alkaline ashes of other plants such as cinnamon, tonka bean, clover, banana peel, or mint, but many shamans keep the exact ingredients of their particular rapé a secret.

Rapé can help you in the following ways:

  • It helps focus and sharpen the mind.
  • Clears a person or space of distracting, bad energies in preparation for intention setting.
  • Detoxes both body and mind and clears your energetic field.
  • Clears sinuses of mucus and bacteria, thereby helping to combat colds and respiratory ailments.
  • It provides a calming, grounding effect on the emotions that lasts much longer than the initial sensation.
