Indian Head Massage

BOOK THIS TREATMENT

“It works on areas affected by mental and emotional stress and its proponents say that it can bring immediate relief.”

ABOUT

Indian head massage (IHM) is a Hindu massage technique, tracing back to the ancient ways of Ayurvedic Indian health care. Used for over 4,000 years to improve overall health, this massage has become more and more prevalent in recent years. It is also known as Champissage.

Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage combines techniques to include various massage strokes and acupressure points. Treatment includes kneading and probing of the neck and shoulder areas. The scalp is then massaged, using squeezing, tapping, rubbing or prodding motions.

The therapist will also manipulate facial pressure points to relieve sinus pressure, increase alertness and stimulate circulation. A patient’s ears may then be pressed and tugged, and their hair tousled.

This form of massage focuses on the three higher „chakras” – mind, body and spirit and as such hits your energy epicenter.

It doesn’t seem sufficient to say that a good Indian head massage will relax you. It’s more than this. It can make you feel detached and serene, leave you sighing and wordless, but also alert and clear-headed, alleviating brain-fog and stress.

Even if you don’t experience this level of relaxation, this massage treatment offers all kinds of other benefits. It may relieve aches, pains, and tension in your neck, back, and shoulders, improve the texture of your hair and encourage it to grow. An Indian head massage stimulates the flow of blood, lymph, and oxygen in your upper body, and therefore may clear your sinuses, relieve stress and help you sleep better. And because it is said to help cure headaches (even migraine), eye strain and anxiety, some say an Indian head massage can help you to concentrate better at work.

CONDITIONS TREATED

Through a variety of massage movements, Indian head massage also restores joint motion and aids in the condition and health of hair resulting in improved hair growth. Indian head massage is used by massage therapists to increase mental clarity and rejuvenate the person receiving the massage. Although treatments include massage of the back, arms, shoulders, and neck, head massage and face massage make up the main parts of the treatment. The massage therapist typically performs IHM through the clothes. As the technique is easy to apply over a blouse or shirt.

Therapeutic and relaxing, Indian head massage is effective in the treatment of stress-related ailments like migraines and headaches. It can be performed almost anywhere and requires less time than a body massage treatment, typically lasting about thirty to forty minutes.

The benefits of Indian head massage include that it helps the release of toxins from tense and knotted muscles, and improves oxygen flow to the brain. It also reduces jaw ache, stimulates lymphatic drainage and aids sleep. By stimulating the release of endorphins IHM also aids in reducing stress and anxiety, and alleviating mental tiredness. The treatment is especially effective in relieving tightness around the neck and shoulders.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

As with any treatment, it is important to tell your therapist in advance if you:

  • are, or think you might be, pregnant
  • have any medical conditions or are receiving any treatment or medication
  • have recently had an injury or operation
  • are allergic to anything, particularly skin allergies
  • have any broken skin or sores on your scalp
  • as this may affect the kind of oil and treatment you receive

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

You should wear loose-fitting clothing so that you don’t feel restricted or uncomfortable. It’s a good idea not to have too many layers. For an Indian head massage, the masseur is liable to want to massage your neck and shoulders, even your upper back, so a polo neck is a bad idea, as is complicated or tight-fitting underwear.

Be prepared for the fact that some of the massages will be quite firm – it can be quite an odd sensation to have your skull massaged, for example – but stick with it. You will feel relaxed and serene afterward. The results are worth it.

Drink plenty of water post-treatment to assist the detox process.

After an Indian head massage you are likely to feel great: relaxed, serene, ache-free, clear-headed, ready to tackle that important report for work, run the children ragged around the park, or fall asleep immediately, depending on the kind of oils used probably!
